Almost everyone knows that Holland was the first major exporter of tulips, but it’s less well known that tulips actually originated in the country of Turkey. The wildly colored tulips that gave Holland its fame as a producer of fine flora weren’t the result of careful botanical breeding but rather came about because of viruses that infected the plants. The wilder the color patterns on the tulip flowers were, the more seriously affected the entire plant was by the virus in question. Although these plants were highly prized by flower connoisseurs all over the world, the virus itself was destroying the species. At the height of the tulip craze, most plants didn’t live longer than a few weeks after their initial bloom.

Modern tulips still aren’t very long-lived, even though the virus that made them popular was eradicated years ago. Holland continues to be one of the largest exporters of floral products in the world.

The Eighty Years’ War

Through the centuries there have been many battles fought in the region now known as Holland. Most notable of these is The Eighty Years’ War, during which sixteen separate battles were fought between 1568 and 1648. The Eighty Years’ War, also known as The Dutch Revolt, was a war fought between the Netherlands and Spain’s king. As a result of the war, one independent state was formed from several united provinces. The provinces that were under the rule of royal Habsburg, seventeen in all, remained, also Belgium and Luxembourg, part of the united provinces, became known as the Southern Netherlands.

The Anglo-Dutch Wars

The first Anglo-Dutch War was started by the British in 1652 in order to gain dominance over the Dutch in European trade . Many wars were fought between 1652 and 1674 in the Anglo-Dutch wars. All were fought for control over the seas and trade routes. In England these wars are know as the Dutch Wars, however, in the Netherlands they are known as the English Wars.

Between 1677 and 1949 various wars, battles, and revolutions have threatened the fabric of this great country, however, Holland has endured and today remains a politically stable, and financially sound country.

There are a lot of reasons to visit Holland but if you haven’t been yet we suggest you start by buying a ticket, setting your home security and getting over there! If you don’t want to be overwhelmed take our tips on what to seek out in the land of clogs.
Skip Amsterdam. No, seriously. It’s long been hailed as a bastion of crazy culture and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. So unless your dying to experience the wild side of Holland, Move on.
Head to the Tulips. One of the greatest sights in all of Holland are the fields of tulips that grow in the most rural areas. There are tulip maps available online but make sure you plan your trip at the time of year when they’ll be blooming. You will be blown away.
Try Some Beer. Okay, so herring may not be your fish of choice but Holland has some really, really good beer. Head to a local pub, chat with the locals and get a pint – something cold, large and foamy.

Holland has a very interesting culture with it’s Dutch influence. However, with the more uninhibited nature of other places in the Netherlands like Amsterdam, there are some very different qualities.

For example, in the culture of Holland, it is much more lay back. In fact, very few women go outside of the house and work a 9-5 job like in most cities or major places. Dinners are much more formal with manners and proper etiquette being a mainstay in their evening engagement. A lot of the Dutch are deeply pious with denominations in 30 Roman Catholic, 20 protestant and 10 other denominations. However, 40 do no have any religious ties, which brings about the interesting characteristics in other parts of the Netherlands.

They have a more formal and punctual way of doing things. When it comes to business, people are on time and manners are at an all time high. Some of the major industries that Holland is known for includes: different man made products, construction, and other kinds of machinery. They also have a huge stake in more agricultural types of industries like livestock, fruits, potatoes, and more. Make sure to keep in close contact with your business partners.

Exploring the history and culture of Holland immediately sheds light on a very interesting fact. To the rest of the world, Holland and The Netherlands are synonymous terms; however to natives of the country, these designations are definitely not the same since Holland is actually situated in the northwestern sector of The Netherlands encompassing the two provinces of North and South Holland.

The capital of North Holland is Haarlem with the major city being Amsterdam where most of the population resides. This area is home to a live-museum depicting 17th and 18 th century life along the Zanzee River. The town of Alkmaar is home to the only stove museum in the world, with exhibits ranging from fine porcelain stoves used in palaces to very small, less-ornate models used in the average home.

Another highlight of North Holland is the Alkmaar’s cheese museum. Exhibits and demonstrations offer insight into the history and tools used in cheese production dating back to the 16th century.

The capital of South Holland, is The Hague, with the main city being Rotterdam. In addition to a cheese market, in operation for around 300 years, South Holland is known for beaches, Delft pottery and flower bulb production.

When traveling to Holland with kids, it is important to keep them entertained. There are plenty of kid friendly activities available to families both local and foreign tourists. Eindhoven, located in southern Holland, is a center of modern art, architecture and fashion. It is associated with the multinational corporation Philips that includes an indoor karting track, plus a park with amenities for families. Speaking of the Philips corporation, there is a historic museum where the corporation first had their start in the 19th century. A great way for kids to learn during their stay in Holland.

Familes would love the Swimming Paradise De Tongelreep, with it’s large subtropical pools with wave machines. Also in this facility are steam baths, large outdoor pools, terraces and bridges. It is a perfect summer activity for the whole family to enjoy.

Another traditional staple in Dutch life is cheese making and the Cheese Farm de Ruurhoeve, located not far from Eindhoven will be a fun experience where the family can see a real working dairy farm. Kids can see the milking of cows and maturation of cheese before being sold to the public.

Kids are always facinated by animals and birds and Parrot Park is the place to learn about them. This animal shelter has over 3500 cockatoos and parrots. With many kinds of reptiles, fish, turtles, emus, squirrels and kangaroos, it is a place where kids can get close to these animals.
